Vrtnica ‘Dezire’

Ime moža, ki je na Hrvaškem žlahtnil vrtnice, je Josip Rogin. Rodil se je leta 1947 in umrl konec koronskega leta 2020. Zase je pravil, da je vzgajal hrvaške vrtnice. Zgledoval se je po Angležu Davidu Austinu, ki je svojo deželo proslavil z »angleškimi« vrtnicami.
Svojo prvo vrtnico je predstavil leta 1986. Ime prve hrvaške sorte ne zveni preveč hrvaško: ‘Moonlight Niagara’. Ime je priglasil pri Ameriškem društvu ljubiteljev
vrtnic (American Rose Society), ki ima pooblastilo za potrjevanje sortnih imen pri vrtnicah. Gre za prostovoljen sistem, ki skrbi za to, da se sortna imena rastlin iste vrste na svetu ne bi podvajala. Ko je ime enkrat prijavljeno, je zasedeno in ga ne more prevzeti nobena nova vrtnica. Priglasitev in odobritev sortnega imena ni povezana z žlahtniteljsko pravico, ki daje žlahtnitelju možnost za odškodnine za razmnoževanje zavarovane sorte.
Josip Rogin je imel na svojem vrtu več kot dvesto vrtnic. Kot priložnostni novinar in pisatelj je svoje prihodke dopolnjeval s prodajo na vrtu narezanih vrtnic na tržnici.
Novih vrtnic ni ustvarjal z načrtnim križanjem temveč s sprožanjem mutacij z mutagenimi kemikalijami. Ustvaril je nekaj čez 20 sort vrtnic. Ena izmed njih je ‘Dezire’. Večina drugih sort ima imena po velikih hrvaških možeh, po hrvaških romarskih krajih in podobnem.

The ‘Dezire’ Rose

The name of the man who breeded roses in Croatia is Josip Rogin. He was born in 1947 and died at the end of 2020. He said of himself that he was a cultivator of Croatian roses. His role model was David Austin, the Englishman who made his country famous with his “English” roses.
He presented his first Croatian rose in 1986. Its name, however, did not sound particularly Croatian: ‘Moonlight Niagara’. He registered the name with the American Rose Society, which is licensed to certify the names of rose varieties. This is a voluntary system, set up in order to prevent the duplication of names of the same varieties across the world. Once the name is registered, it is taken and cannot be used for a new rose variety. The registration and approval of a variety name is not tied to cultivating rights, which instead gives the cultivator the right to financial compensation for propagating a patented variety.
Josip Rogin had over 200 varieties of roses in his garden. As a freelance journalist and writer, he supplemented his income by selling cut roses from his garden at the market.
He did not create new roses by deliberate crossing, but rather by triggering mutations with mutation inducing agents. He created somewhere over 20 new rose varieties. The ‘Dezire’ is one of them. Most of his other varieties are named after important men form Croatian history, or after places of pilgrimage and the like.
