Vrtnica ‘La France’

Kaj so skrižane čajevke?

The ‘La France’ Rose

Country of origin: France

The creation of the ‘La France’ in 1867 marked the end of the period of historic roses. ‘La France’ was considered the first hybrid tea rose, which means that 1867 is a landmark year, separating historic from the modern roses. The 20th century was the century of the hybrid tea rose.

In 1829, the gardener Jean-Baptiste Guillot opened a tree nursery in Lyon, where his eponymous son started working at 14 years of age. Guillot Sr. was the first Lyon nurseryman to specialise exclusively in roses. He was soon followed by others, and Lyon eventually grew into the capital of rose cultivation in France.

Guillot Sr. cultivated roses and mostly created the then popular hybrid perpetual roses and original tea roses. Guillot Jr. introduced a novelty, i.e. propagation of rootstocks from wild rosehip seeds instead of cuttings. He established his reputation as a rosarian with the cultivation of a first hybrid tea rose, the first polyantha, and the first reasonably yellow tea rose.

What are hybrid tea roses? Nowadays, this group of roses is considered the beauty ideal of a rose. They were created by gardeners crossing hybrid perpetual roses with original tea roses. Their descendants have strong, erect stems and the familiar shaped blossoms one can see at the florist’s.

The rose variety is a part of the exhibition The EU and Rose.
