Vrtnica ‘Papa Joao XXIII’

The ‘Papa Joao XXIII’ Rose

Country of origin: Portugal

Papa Joao XXIII is the Portuguese name for Pope John XXIII. At the moment, it is the only rose descended from Portugal in Arboretum Volčji Potok.

The variety was created in Porto, in the nursery of Alfredo Moreire da Silva and his sons. The founder of the company, Alfredo Moreira da Silva (died in 1932), was a renowned horticulturalist.

It is probably not by accident that the rose was named after John XXIII, since the naming coincided with his death in 1963. Its blossoms are a pure pale pink, but the rose is relatively weak in terms of growth and health. We attribute this to the period during which it was created and our climate, which it is unaccustomed to.

Portugal is a Catholic country, where the women traditionally use roses to decorate graves and churches, just like in Slovenia.

The rose variety is a part of the exhibition The EU and Rose.
