The ‘Prešeren’ Rose
Country of origin: Slovenia
The ‘Prešeren’ rose is the best known rose bred in Slovenia. It was created by Dr. Matjaž Kmecl, who upgraded his amateur passion for roses by deliberate crossing. He approached the project systematically, following a plan whose aim was to combine the good properties of four existing rose varieties. He created both the maternal and paternal plants by crossing. The most successful seedling was eventually named ‘Prešeren’ in 2008. The Slovenian Rose Society completed the process of gaining internationally recognised cultivation rights. With this variety, Slovenians were officially recognised as rose breeders.
Everyone working with roses in Slovenia is proud of Kmecl’s achievement. The ‘Prešeren’ is a good rose. It is a strong and sturdy bush, which grows up to 1.5 metres in the summer. While flowering, it is sometimes completely obscured by its pale pink blossoms. The blossoms are well built and are not harmed by rain. Its leaves are dark green and healthy. Black spot does not cause it to stop flowering, and certainly does not cause it to die, even if left unsprayed. It should be planted in an airy and sunny place.
Following a local initiative, the ‘Prešeren’ was planted in a flowerbed next to the poet’s France Prešeren birth house in Vrba. In 2017, the Municipality of Bled ordered 200 plants of this variety to be planted in the big flowerbed in the Spa Park.
The rose variety is a part of the exhibition The EU and Rose.
